Blog Tour & Giveaway: Black Beauty by Constance Burris

I’m excited today to be a stop on the blog tour for Black Beauty by Constance Burris. I reviewed her book Coal in mid-August as part of the Diverse Book Tours program, and am glad to both be able to read and review more of her work!

The youth of the Vista Apartments haven’t exactly had perfect childhoods–it’s not the best of neighborhoods–but they do the best they can for themselves. And all of them have been warned to avoid their neighbor, “Crazy” Jade. Voodoo priestess? Witch doctor? Witch? Depends on which person you ask. But there is definitely something about her that makes that warning one that everyone should heed for there are dire consequences for any to stumble too far into her path.

What an interesting read! The intersecting lives of everyone involved in this story make for a very interesting introduction to the world in which this all takes place–lots of background on everyone comes organically from learning how they connect together. And even though the main plot of the story builds to where a reader might think it would go, there are some unexpected twists at the end that definitely surprised me.

For those how have read Coal (which I definitely recommend), this also serves as a nice prequel. While it’s not set in the same place and time, it provides some important backstory…and I’ll just leave it at that. Personally, I would like to know what happens to some of the characters that we leave here…maybe they will show up again in the Everleaf series…

Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Marci Guerrero is one of the best teen hackers in Seattle. However, she’d give up all her talents to know she isn’t crazy.

Marci feels possessed by what she perceives as shadowy spectres that take control of her body and make her do crazy things. While spying on the clandestine group known as IgNiTe, she’s confronted by the leader, James McCray. His presence stirs the spectres inside her brain into a maddening frenzy. Her symptoms and ability to control them don’t go unnoticed by James, who soon recruits her and shows her the awful truth.

Half of the world’s population is infected by sentient parasites. They bind themselves to the human brain and replace the pathways for all thoughts and actions. The creatures then morph their hosts into grotesque monsters with extraordinary strengths. Winged, clawed, fanged half-humans become living nightmares. Now Marci wishes she was crazy, because the truth is worse.

She’s infected.

What an intriguing world that the author has created. There’s a unique richness to the characters, the setting, and the story that I really appreciated as a reader. Furthermore, there’s some refreshing originality in the way the plot rolls out that I felt was a bit different than other YA sci-fi. (Yes, there is still the whole cliche of the female protagonist having romantic angst, but at least it didn’t end up becoming the sole focus of Marci’s motivation here as has been the larger trend of late.)

Overall, I found this to be a very interesting read. It was quick for its length and easy to understand. It wasn’t difficult to get immersed in this world, either. Recommended for YA sci-fi fans, for sure.

Book Tour & Giveaway: The Devil Will Do by Heidi Cullinan

TDWD blog tour horizontal_edited-1

Today I’m excited to review The Devil Will Do by Heidi Cullinan as part of the book’s release tour.  Be sure to check out a giveaway being offered by the author at the end of this post!

In a land unforgiving of indulgent, dangerous sex, merchantman Eryn does his best to keep his desires in the dark…until the plight of a beautiful prince leads him out of the shadows and into adventures both sensual and terrible.

Capture, curse, and torture litter Eryn’s road to true love, along with carnal delights beyond his most wicked imaginings. His strengths and limitations are exposed—and the hard truth, that nothing holds him back more than the monster of self-loathing in his heart. Prince Wyn might be everything he’s dreamed of in a man—and master—but before Eryn can accept the exquisitely wicked affections of his one true love, he must first save himself…from himself.

This novella was originally published under the title Sweet Son and has been significantly revised.

Eryn knows he is not worthy of love. He lives a life of “perversion” and people like him can’t ever be happy. It isn’t just that he desires other men, it’s how he desires them: rough, domineering, and even a bit degrading. But when he meets Prince Wyn–who is in a far off land and might be in danger–in a dream, he sets out on an adventure that he hopes might end in the love he desires, even if he still doesn’t believe he deserves it. What follows is a journey of personal challenges and self-discovery that might just help him see that “[e]veryone has worth.”

The idea of reading a BDSM fantasy tale is one that honestly sort of surprised me–it’s not something I think I would normally pick up. But I’m honestly glad I read this one. The fantastic setting is wonderfully constructed with all the trappings of a fairy tale (though definitely racier than anything you read in your youth). There’s royalty, magic, a witch, a demon, and a curse which must be broken. And some real heat to go with it.

I will say the content here is not for everyone. This definitely pushes some people would see as boundaries. There are dubious consent (and perhaps less-than-dubious consent) elements, bondage scenes, and ‘public’ humiliation.

Tour: Book Review & Giveaway: Deceived by L.A. Starkey

Title: Deceived (Soul Keeper, Book 1)
Author: L.A. Starkey
Published: August 28, 2014
Pages: 505
Publisher: L.A. Starkey
Websites: Goodreads / Amazon

Synopsis:
They say a soul is the immaterial essence, the animating principle, the actuating cause of an individual life.

But what if you had to share yours with the one person you hated the most?

The soul mate principle states that for every one soul there is another that will recognize its match, hence creating the perfect union.

But what if you had two soul mates, which would you choose?

What if your choices had eternal ramification?

Deceived, the debut novel in the Soul Keeper Series, is a modern day love story about the implications of having more than one soul mate, and having to choose between the two of them. The decisions of the gods has left the next generation, their heirs, torn between fate and reality, and the balance of the future hangs in anticipation of what’s to come.

What a wonderful start to what I expect will be one of those epic young adult trilogies everyone inevitably winds up raving about. And in this case, I certainly think that is deserved. Even though I have a bit of a predisposition to paranormal young adult stories that involve mythology (see: my clamoring to read everything by Rick Riordan), I think this is one that would be enjoyable even for those who are not major fans of the genre.

The characters here are endearing and engaging. There are complicated dynamics here that are evident even before everyone’s true nature and role are revealed. And the reveal is well-done, leaving the reader with just as many questions as answers. The story builds to an end that is unexpected and will leave readers wanting more.

I will definitely be picking up the second book. I need to know what happens next.
